the scholar athlete

He who is only an athlete is too crude, too vulgar, too much a savage. He who is a scholar only is too soft, too effeminate. The ideal citizen is the scholar athlete, the man of thought and the man of action.
— Plato

The words Scholar Athlete conjure images of a warrior-poet, someone capable of feats of physical prowess allied to an intellectual curiosity. Someone ready to fight but who can also express themselves in writing. An artist on the field and on the page.

Below are some examples of people I believe to be scholar athletes. I’d love to add to my database. Scroll down and click on the image to add your suggestions! I’m keen to include those who are a scholar first and athlete second as well.

I’ve spoken to educational institutions about the concept of the Scholar Athlete. It’s ideal for those pursuing sport and study concurrently and you can see the slides here.

Some men learn all they know from books; others from life; both kinds are narrow. The first are all theory; the second are all practice. It’s the fellow who knows enough about practice to test his theories for blow-holes that gives the world a shove ahead, and finds a fair margin of profit in shoving it.
— George Horace Lorimer
